In this sense, the choice of materials used in construction and finishing is fundamental to ensuring a sustainable project that minimizes environmental and social impacts and is durable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing.<\/p>\n<p>But how do you choose the most suitable sustainable materials for each project? What criteria should be considered? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option? These are some of the questions we will answer in this text, which aims to guide architects and clients in defining sustainable materials for their projects.<\/p>\n<h2>What are sustainable materials?<\/h2>\n<p>First of all, it is necessary to understand what sustainable materials are and what their characteristics are. According to the Brazilian Council for Sustainable Construction (CBCS), sustainable materials are those that:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 They exhibit low energy and natural resource consumption in their production, transportation, and installation;<br \/>\n\u2013 They have low emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants in their manufacture and use;<br \/>\n\u2013 They are recyclable, reusable, or biodegradable at the end of their useful life;<br \/>\n\u2013 They do not contain substances that are toxic or harmful to human health and the environment;<br \/>\n\u2013 They offer thermal, acoustic, visual, and ergonomic comfort to users;<br \/>\n\u2013 They possess technical, aesthetic, and functional quality compatible with the project.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, it is important to consider the life cycle of materials, that is, all stages from raw material extraction to final disposal. This allows for the evaluation of the environmental performance of materials at each stage and the selection of those with the least impact.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the criteria for choosing sustainable materials?<\/h2>\n<p>The choice of sustainable materials depends on several factors, such as the type of project, the location of the work, the available budget, technical standards, the preferences of the client and the architect, among others. However, there are some general criteria that can help in this decision. These are:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Origin: prefer local or regional materials, which reduce energy consumption and pollutant emissions during transport. Additionally, check if the materials have environmental or social certification, which attests to the legal and responsible origin of the raw materials.<br \/>\n\u2013 Durability: opt for materials that have a long lifespan and require little maintenance or repair. This avoids wasting resources and generating waste.<br \/>\n\u2013 Reuse: prioritize materials that can be reused in other projects or for other purposes. For example, reclaimed wood, old bricks, recycled roof tiles, etc.<br \/>\n\u2013 Recycling: choosing materials that are recyclable or that contain recycled material in their composition. For example, recycled plastic, recycled paper, recycled glass, etc.<br \/>\n\u2013 Biodegradability: selecting materials that are biodegradable or compostable at the end of their useful life. Bamboo has high mechanical resistance and flexibility, and can replace wood in various applications. De acordo com o Conselho Brasileiro de Constru\u00e7\u00e3o Sustent\u00e1vel (CBCS), materiais sustent\u00e1veis s\u00e3o aqueles que: &#8211; Apresentam baixo consumo de energia e de recursos naturais na sua produ\u00e7\u00e3o, transporte e instala\u00e7\u00e3o; &#8211; Possuem baixa emiss\u00e3o de gases de efeito estufa e de poluentes na sua fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o e uso; &#8211; S\u00e3o recicl\u00e1veis, reutiliz\u00e1veis ou biodegrad\u00e1veis ao final da sua vida \u00fatil; &#8211; N\u00e3o cont\u00eam subst\u00e2ncias t\u00f3xicas ou nocivas \u00e0 sa\u00fade humana e ao meio ambiente; &#8211; Oferecem conforto t\u00e9rmico, ac\u00fastico, visual e ergon\u00f4mico aos usu\u00e1rios; &#8211; Possuem qualidade t\u00e9cnica, est\u00e9tica e funcional compat\u00edvel com o projeto. Al\u00e9m disso, \u00e9 importante considerar o ciclo de vida dos materiais, ou seja, todas as etapas desde a extra\u00e7\u00e3o da mat\u00e9ria-prima at\u00e9 o descarte final. Assim, \u00e9 poss\u00edvel avaliar o desempenho ambiental dos materiais em cada fase e escolher aqueles que apresentam menor impacto. Quais s\u00e3o os crit\u00e9rios para escolher materiais sustent\u00e1veis? A escolha dos materiais sustent\u00e1veis depende de v\u00e1rios fatores, como o tipo de projeto, o local da obra, o or\u00e7amento dispon\u00edvel, as normas t\u00e9cnicas, as prefer\u00eancias do cliente e do arquiteto, entre outros. No entanto, existem alguns crit\u00e9rios gerais que podem ajudar nessa decis\u00e3o. S\u00e3o eles: &#8211; Origem: preferir materiais locais ou regionais, que reduzem o consumo de energia e a emiss\u00e3o de poluentes no transporte. Al\u00e9m disso, verificar se os materiais possuem certifica\u00e7\u00e3o ambiental ou social, que atestam a proced\u00eancia legal e respons\u00e1vel da mat\u00e9ria-prima. &#8211; Durabilidade: optar por materiais que tenham longa vida \u00fatil e que demandem pouca manuten\u00e7\u00e3o ou reparo. Isso evita o desperd\u00edcio de recursos e a gera\u00e7\u00e3o de res\u00edduos. &#8211; Reutiliza\u00e7\u00e3o: priorizar materiais que possam ser reaproveitados em outras obras ou em outros usos. A seguir, apresentamos alguns exemplos: &#8211; Madeira certificada: \u00e9 a madeira proveniente de florestas manejadas de forma sustent\u00e1vel, que respeitam os aspectos ambientais, sociais e econ\u00f4micos. A madeira certificada possui o selo do Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) ou do Programa Brasileiro de Certifica\u00e7\u00e3o Florestal (Cerflor), que garantem a sua origem legal e respons\u00e1vel. A madeira certificada pode ser utilizada em estruturas, esquadrias, pisos, forros, m\u00f3veis, etc. &#8211; Bambu: \u00e9 uma planta de r\u00e1pido crescimento e de f\u00e1cil cultivo, que n\u00e3o requer o uso de agrot\u00f3xicos ou fertilizantes. O bambu possui alta resist\u00eancia mec\u00e2nica e flexibilidade, podendo substituir a madeira em diversas aplica\u00e7\u00f5es. O bambu pode ser utilizado em estruturas, coberturas, pisos, forros, m\u00f3veis, etc. &#8211; Tijolo ecol\u00f3gico: \u00e9 um tipo de tijolo que n\u00e3o utiliza queima na sua fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o, o que reduz o consumo de energia e a emiss\u00e3o de poluentes. Ele \u00e9 feito de uma mistura de solo, cimento e \u00e1gua, que \u00e9 prensada em formas, possui encaixes que facilitam a montagem e dispensam o uso de argamassa, pode ser utilizado em alvenarias estruturais ou de veda\u00e7\u00e3o. &#8211; Telha ecol\u00f3gica: \u00e9 um tipo de telha que utiliza material reciclado na sua composi\u00e7\u00e3o, como pl\u00e1stico, papel, vidro, etc. A telha ecol\u00f3gica possui baixo peso, alta durabilidade e resist\u00eancia \u00e0s intemp\u00e9ries. A telha ecol\u00f3gica pode ser utilizada em coberturas de diversos tipos de edifica\u00e7\u00f5es. &#8211; Tinta natural: \u00e9 um tipo de tinta que utiliza pigmentos naturais ou org\u00e2nicos na sua formula\u00e7\u00e3o, como terra, argila, plantas, etc. A tinta natural n\u00e3o cont\u00e9m solventes org\u00e2nicos vol\u00e1teis (VOCs) ou outras subst\u00e2ncias t\u00f3xicas ou nocivas \u00e0 sa\u00fade humana e ao meio ambiente.
